Resetting a Mac will wipe your files and reinstall macOS, scrubbing all of your files especially the important ones, And you should factory reset any Apple product before you sell it or trade it in, especially if it’s an old iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
How to reset a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro
For a Safty, you should follow the below instruction correctly. Otherwise, there will be a chance of Failure or missing Files.
1. Backup your files
We can't overstate the importance of this step. Creating a backup will protect your most valuable files. If you don't back up your data, it will disappear into the ether when you perform a factory reset. Before resetting your Mac, make sure you save one final backup before moving forward.
2. Sign out of iCloud, iMessage, and iTunes
Choose Account > Authorizations > Deauthorize This Computer.
If you're running the latest macOS, you can skip this step. You will be asked whether to keep a copy of your iCloud data on this Mac. You can click 'Keep a Copy,' since you're erasing your Mac later in the reset process.
3. Enter recovery mode
Entering recovery mode, an important step to reset a Mac,- Restart your computer: hold the power button > select Restart when it appears
- While the computer restarts, Hold down the Command key and R key on the keyboard and turn on the Mac. Let go when the Apple logo pops up.
- Select your language and continue.
- You can see a Recovery Mode menu, Choose Disk Utility, and click Continue.
4. Erase the machine

- Restart your computer: hold the power button > select Restart when it appears
- While the computer restarts, Hold down the Command key and R key on the keyboard and turn on the Mac. Let go when the Apple logo pops up.
- Select your language and continue.
- You can see a Recovery Mode menu, Choose Disk Utility, and click Continue.
- Make sure the ‘Macintosh HD’ startup disk is highlighted in your Disk Utility window > select Erase
- After you've chosen a name for the disk once it's erased, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the dropdown menu and then click Erase.
- Select Quit Disk Utility in the Disk Utility menu.
5. Reinstall macOS
Select 'Reinstall macOS' from the utility window in macOS Recovery, then choose 'Continue' and follow the installer's instructions or A window will then appear giving you the option to reinstall macOS > select Install macOS
If the installer offers you the choice between installing on 'Macintosh HD' or 'Macintosh HD - Data', select 'Macintosh HD'.
After the new macOS is installed, your computer has been successfully factory reset
